What is a Protocol?A protocol is a set of rules that governs the communications between computers on a network. These rules include guidelines that regulate the following characteristics of a network: access method, allowed physical topologies, types of cabling, and speed of data transfer. See the Topology and Cabling sections of this tutorial for more information. The most common protocols are: Ethernet LocalTalk Token Ring FDDI ATM EthernetThe Ethernet protocol is by far the most widely used. Ethernet uses an access method called CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection). This is a system where each computer listens to the cable before sending anything through the network. If the network is clear, the computer will transmit. If some other node is already transmitting on the cable, the computer will wait and try again when the line is clear. Sometimes, two computers attempt to transmit at the same instant. When this happens a collision occurs. Each computer then backs off and waits a random amount of time before attempting to retransmit. With this access method, it is normal to have collisions. However, the delay caused by collisions and retransmitting is very small and does not normally effect the speed of transmission on the network. The Ethernet protocol allows for linear bus, star, or tree topologies. Data can be transmitted over twisted pair, coaxial, or fiber optic cable at a speed of 10 Mbps. Fast EthernetTo allow for an increased speed of transmission, the Ethernet protocol has developed a new standard that supports 100 Mbps. This is commonly called Fast Ethernet. Fast Ethernet requires the use of different, more expensive network concentrators/hubs and network interface cards. In addition, category 5 twisted pair or fiber optic cable is necessary. Fast Ethernet is becoming common in schools that have been recently wired.Gigabit Ethernet The most recent development in the Ethernet standard is a protocol that has a transmission speed of 1 Gbps. Gigabit Ethernet is primarily used for backbones on a network at this time. In the future, it will probably be used for workstation and server connections also. It can be used with both fiber optic cabling and copper. The 1000BaseTX, the copper cable used for Gigabit Ethernet, is expected to become the formal standard in 1999.LocalTalkLocalTalk is a network protocol that was developed by Apple Computer, Inc. for Macintosh computers. The method used by LocalTalk is called CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance). It is similar to CSMA/CD except that a computer signals its intent to transmit before it actually does so. LocalTalk adapters and special twisted pair cable can be used to connect a series of computers through the serial port. The Macintosh operating system allows the establishment of a peer-to-peer network without the need for additional software. With the addition of the server version of AppleShare software, a client/server network can be established. The LocalTalk protocol allows for linear bus, star, or tree topologies using twisted pair cable. A primary disadvantage of LocalTalk is speed. Its speed of transmission is only 230 Kbps. Token RingThe Token Ring protocol was developed by IBM in the mid-1980s. The access method used involves token-passing. In Token Ring, the computers are connected so that the signal travels around the network from one computer to another in a logical ring. A single electronic token moves around the ring from one computer to the next. If a computer does not have information to transmit, it simply passes the token on to the next workstation. If a computer wishes to transmit and receives an empty token, it attaches data to the token. The token then proceeds around the ring until it comes to the computer for which the data is meant. At this point, the data is captured by the receiving computer. The Token Ring protocol requires a star-wired ring using twisted pair or fiber optic cable. It can operate at transmission speeds of 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps. Due to the increasing popularity of Ethernet, the use of Token Ring in school environments has decreased. FDDIFiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) is a network protocol that is used primarily to interconnect two or more local area networks, often over large distances. The access method used by FDDI involves token-passing. FDDI uses a dual ring physical topology. Transmission normally occurs on one of the rings; however, if a break occurs, the system keeps information moving by automatically using portions of the second ring to create a new complete ring. A major advantage of FDDI is speed. It operates over fiber optic cable at 100 Mbps.ATMAsynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a network protocol that transmits data at a speed of 155 Mbps and higher. ATM works by transmitting all data in small packets of a fixed size; whereas, other protocols transfer variable length packets. ATM supports a variety of media such as video, CD-quality audio, and imaging. ATM employs a star topology, which can work with fiber optic as well as twisted pair cable.ATM is most often used to interconnect two or more local area networks. It is also frequently used by Internet Service Providers to utilize high-speed access to the Internet for their clients. As ATM technology becomes more cost-effective, it will provide another solution for constructing faster local area networks. isJustFreeReal Family Freebiesfree stuff from the USABest Surveys for Cah RewardsReal Free Ringtones and LogosWin Free Prizes with the latest free contests .

Cell phone companies like: Motorola, Verizon, Nokia, Lg, Sprint and Cingular are more than willing to give away a free cell phone in exchange for you taking a look at their rate plans. The heavy competition between these companies is great for you, the consumer. The best cell phone companies all have very competitive rates, but some may suit your needs better than others. Often you'll find a decent plan that will give you a free or cheap prepaid cell phone as part of the deal. After you get your new cell phone, you may find that you want to purchase some additional phone accessories. Most cell phone manufacturers offer a wide range of discount phone accessories including: batteries, colorful faceplates, cases, hands free kit (great for driving), and car phone battery chargers. And who can resist all the other popular freebies you can get with a cell phone these days: Free cell phone ringtones or ringer (pop and rap music ringtones are especially popular); Free cell phone games; Free cell phone downloads to your computer; Free cell phone number search; and Free cell phone wallpapers are just a few. It's hard to believe that only a few years ago cell phones were something that only certain businesspeople used. Now, they're practically everywhere and may actually make the old style telephones obsolete in the near future. While they aren't quite as cool as those Star Trek communicators, they're pretty close. Best of all, they're free for the taking..

If you own a cell phone then you are probably familiar with the term ringtones. A ringtone is the sound or music your cell phone plays to alert you that you have an incoming call. There are several types of ringtones available - polyphonic and monophonic. Monophonic ringtones are tunes that are comprised of a single tone. Polyphonic ringtones are the most popular and consist of a tune that is comprised of multiple tones, thus producing a more full sound. Both polyphonic and monophonic ringtones can be downloaded from ringtone shops on the internet or downloaded directly from your cellular service provider. Some ringtones are free while others may cost you anywhere from .50cents to $2.00 per tune. There are also some ringtone sites that will allow you to download either a set number or an unlimited number of ringtones per month for a flat monthly fee. This type of fee arrangement may be the most cost effective if you wish to download ringtones on a frequent basis.Ringtones are a cheap and fun way to personalize your cell phone.
www.buymebay.com is a website which gives a completely new twist to finding love online. Members can put themselves up 'for sale' or bid on others who are 'auctioning themselves off' to the highest bidder.Email addresses only are for sale. Members can also chat and flirt in the 'Flirtzone' before making their final bids on their object ofdesire. Free polyphonic ringtones for members are also on site, as well as a retro-games arcade section. Joining up is free.BuyMeBay has brought the thrill of bidding and selling on an auction site to the world of dating.Members simply put a picture and a description up on the site and other members are invited to bid for the chance of getting to know theauctionee better. Bidding starts at just ?1.00 and is capped at ?30.Other dating sites all start with the premise that if for example, Julie wants to find love, then Julie should pay expensive fees to read replies or access emails sent to her by interested parties. She cannot pick and chose which replies interest her and no contact details are ever revealed to her other than an email address.Buymebay turns this notion on its head, and asks only that the interested parties should pay for the chance to chat to Julie, not the other way round. She won't pay a penny. She again receives an email address at the end of the process but this time she knows whoever won her auction, has watched her auction countdown, outbid other interested parties and paid for the chance to chat to her. This sorts out who is genuinely interested in her and who is just trying their luck.Members are limited to one auction at a time, but can bid on as many auctions as they like. Also of course, the real and thrill of taking part in an auction environment is well proven. It is an exciting and fun thing to doonline and Buymebay think dating should be too.BuyMeBay went live only a few months ago but has over 1000 members in the Auction Site and 300 of these regularly chatting and flirting withother members in the 'FlirtZone'. At the moment any member who posts 100 times in the 'Flirtzone' can start using the Personal Messaging service offered. This also gives members another way of chatting privately, swapping email addresses and also offers a way of building up a lively community for all members to enjoy. Again this is free although members can pay to subscribe if they wish to Personal Message another member sooner than 100 posts..
